Riding For The Disabled

Special Olympic Equestrian

Special Olympic training and competition is open to anyone with an intellectual disability 8 years of age or older, who registers to participate in the programme.

What is an Intellectual Disability?

An inpidual whose learning is slower and often different, that prevents or inhibits them developing the range of cognitive, physical and social skills usually found in a person of the same age.

All Special Olympic Equestrian Athletes are members of RDA in New Zealand. All eligible riders register with their local Special Olympic Regional Office. This enables riders to take part in any Special Olympic sports, training and social events offered in their region.

RDA provides Group Ribbon Days and Regional Games Days for riders to compete and therefore be eligible for National and International selection. Riders choose events in which to compete. Events include:

  • Dressage Equitation
  • Working Trail
  • Gymkana Games (eg bending)

For more information see the Special Olpymics New Zealand website.

Paraequestrian eligibility is open to any rider with a physical disability who is 16 years of age or older. Rider's interested in becoming a paraequestrain should first be classified by the IPEC classifier.
